OSS – The new façade of the department store of Ter Horst van Geel on the Walplein in Oss deserves a compliment, alderman Jules Iding reacts. “Architecture is not one of my responsibilities, but the plan has been implemented very carefully and it fits well into the scale of the center. You can see that Ter Horst van Geel has invested a lot into it.”
Positive sounds can also be heard from the corner of the Ontwerperskring Oss. “The main asset is that the plan has been implemented with a lot of care, beautiful detail and good material in my opinion. I am not an advocate of the retro style, but I think the new building is an asset to Oss”, says architect Floor Mollen, member of the Ontwerperskring.
Last week the first scaffolding has been removed from the new building of the department store, which opens on the 6th of March. Friso Woudstra of Vorden designed the façade, built in Art Nouveau. He has a preference for rebuilding old styles. “I think a lot of inhabitants in Oss will be happy with it”, Iding says, who indicates that he himself is not an advocate of the retro style. Iding is happier with what is happening on the Walplein at the moment because the approach to change ugly facades has not really gotten off the ground. The municipality has had a façade-improvement-plan ready for a while that should serve as a guide for an impulse in quality in the center. But the entrepreneurs themselves are not really picking up the intentions, Iding says. “That one can say: there is some activity, no. It’s a bit quiet. There is no involvement. And we can’t enforce anything.”
